What to not say in your first message when using a dating service?
Netspeak, poor grammar, and bad spelling are giant turn-offs. Biggest negatives on the list? Ur, r, u, ya, can”t, hit, realy, luv, wat, and so on. These all make a horrible first impression. In fact, the worst 6 words you can use in a first message are all stupid slang. Language like this is such a big deal-breaker that correctly written but otherwise ho-hum words like don’t and won’t have nicely above average response rates. However, interesting exceptions to this “no netspeak” rule are amusement expressions like “haha” and “lol”. Both actually turned out to be quite good for the sender. Apparently people like a sense of humor, and you need to be casual to convey genuine laughter. “hehe” is also a successful word, but much less so. Scientifically, this is because it sounds a little bit evil.
So, to sum it up, it’s okay to laugh, but keep the rest of your message in proper grammar and proper punctuation.
